The former Minister of the Environment, Mrs Jeanne d'Arc Mujawamariya, and the permanent secretary of the same ministry, Patrick Karera, have been indicted for mismanagement of forestry projects.

The Rwanda Bureau of Investigation (RIB) initiated an investigation into Mrs Mujawamariya and Karera following Mujawamariya's dismissal as Minister of Civil Service and Labor on Thursday, July 25.

Mujawamariya held the position of environment minister from November 2019 until last month. The investigation is focused on her tenure at the Ministry of the Environment.

In a statement released by the RIB spokesperson on Thursday, it was mentioned that " Mrs Mujawamariya and Karera are currently under investigation for mismanagement of projects related to forest conservation."

It was also stated that Karera had been under interrogation to corroborate evidence with available information. Additionally, Dr. Thierry B. Murangira stated that several other individuals are suspected of mismanagement.

According to sources, the investigation is linked to the Rwandan Forestry Authority based in Huye. Murangira clarified that Mrs Mujawamariya and Karera have not been arrested as the investigation is still ongoing.

The Prime Minister's Office stated that Mrs  Mujawamariya was removed from the Cabinet due to concerns about accountability.

Furthermore, Mrs Mujawamariya previously served as Minister of Education and Gender and Family Promotion.
