American musician and songwriter Bob Weir passed away surrounded by his loved ones, according to his family. The rock group Grateful Dead's former guitarist and singer was 78 years old. He had just battled a cancer diagnosis, but his family said he passed away from "underlying lung difficulties" in their Instagram post. The notification omitted Weir's death date. Weir spent decades as a bassist and singer with the American psychedelic rock group the Grateful Dead. He also composed several of the band's songs, such as the popular "Sugar Magnolia," which is a mainstay at Grateful Dead performances. In addition, he had a lengthy solo career, playing live until months before his death and forming a number of bands with other Grateful Dead alumni. Born Robert Hall Parber in San Francisco, California, on October 16, 1947, Weir spent some time attending school in Colorado, where he met John Perry Barlow, a future member of the Grateful Dead, before growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area. At the age of 13, Weir began playing guitar and became involved in the local bluegrass scene, where he first heard Jerry Garcia play the banjo. Garcia and Weir decided to start their own band, Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions, on December 31, 1965. This band later became the Grateful Dead. For many years, Weir sang and played rhythm guitar with the ensemble. Beginning in the 1970s, he also experimented with a solo career and a number of different bands outside of the Grateful Dead, such as Furthur, RatDog, Bobby and the Midnites, Kingfish, and The different.

According to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), a 14-year-old girl was killed by a female lion at a ranch south of Nairobi National Park in Nairobi, Kenya's capital. The girl was attacked within her own house. Another adolescent who was inside the house at the time claimed to have witnessed the lioness grab the girl before warning others. According to authorities, there was no proof that the victim or witness had provoked the attack in any way. The lioness was thought to have climbed a "makeshift" fence to enter the residential neighborhood after being drawn there by the lack of food. The girl's body was found in the Mbagathi River after rangers and emergency teams were swiftly called in and followed a trail of bloodstains, according to KWS. She had suffered a lower back injury. The lioness was still missing as of Friday. To find the lioness, search teams swept the area and authorities placed traps. In Africa, lion attacks on people are uncommon, particularly when they do not include animals. According to KWS officials, talks were taking place to "reinforce security measures" in an attempt to stop future occurrences of the same kind. A day earlier, an elephant in Kenya's Nyeri County killed a 54-year-old man in an unconnected incident, according to the KWS.

In Motherwell, Gqeberra, South Africa, four armed assailants abducted 45-year-old American pastor Josh Sullivan during a prayer session he was conducting at the nearby Fellowship Baptist Church. A representative representing Sullivan's family, Jeremy Hall, was there when the kidnapping occurred. He claimed that the abductors knew his name. He told the Associated Free Press that he thought money had anything to do with the kidnapping. Two cell phones were also taken during the kidnappings, according to the police. After coercing Sullivan into his own Toyota Fortuner at gunpoint, the assailants fled with him as a hostage. Although Sullivan's whereabouts were unknown, authorities later discovered the car abandoned about a mile from the scene of the kidnapping. The Hawks, South Africa's elite police team that specializes in organized crime, have been placed to the forefront of the inquiry, Police Captain Andre Beetge told the BBC. Sullivan's colleague claimed that although no ransom had yet been posted, the kidnapping was one of ransom.
