Inequality in WASAC water distribution in Muhanga District
The Water and Sanitation Corporation, WASAC, is accused by some of its customers of the unequal distribution of water.

Residents of different villages in the Nyamabuye, Shyogwe, Muhanga, and Cyeza sectors are among those accusing Wasac of this.
Residents of these areas say that some of them have spent more than one month without water, while for others it's for three weeks, and the residents of Ruvumera, Kabgayi Gahogo, and Kibirigi get it every day.
These residents criticize the leader of WASAC for not paying attention to the services that are equitably provided to customers.
One of the customers said, “When the month is last they bring us the pay bill like the people who pumped the water.”
Mr. Muligo Jean Claude, WASAC Branch Manager in Muhanga highlighted that the water supplies by the water plant are few than the consumers. And he accepts the existence of the problem of water shortage in many parts of Muhanga City.
"When they inform us, we go there to see what the problem they had, today we are sending our technicians to see how to solve those water shortages they have," he said.
He added that the solution to the problem of water shortage in a sustainable way is to build another water treatment plant.
He also said that the second solution they are going to take care of is to distribute the water to the users equally.
"We are going to water one area at least two days a week," he said.
The Gihuma water plant was closed in 1988, due to the few customers at that time. The former has already lost 800 cubic meters of water due to aging.
Various factories processing the different equipment located in Muhanga City use 500 cubic meters of the 3000 cubic meters Gihuma water plant offers.
Last year 2023, WASAC in Muhanga City had 12,000 customers consisting of over 100,000 people.
