Ousted Political Leaders Challenge Dissolution of Parties

Meanwhile, several former leaders of Mali’s now-dissolved political parties have taken legal action to contest the government’s May 13 decision to dissolve all political Parties. The challenge, led by lawyer and former minister Mountaga Tall, was filed on May 21 across multiple courts in Bamako.

Ousted Political Leaders Challenge Dissolution of Parties

Ten former party heads, acting as “concerned citizens” to avoid sanctions, submitted complaints arguing that the dissolution violates constitutional rights to association, participation in public life, and freedom of assembly. Mountaga Tall explained that the legal strategy aims to push courts to refer the case to the Constitutional Court, hoping it will declare the decree unconstitutional.

"No one can rule outside or against the Constitution, not even during a transition," Tall emphasized, insisting that political freedoms, multiparty democracy, and the rule of law are non-negotiable.

Despite low expectations of success due to perceived judicial subservience to the junta, the legal push serves to mobilize public opinion, maintain pressure on the regime, and keep the democratic debate alive.

As one political figure put it, “This is a war of attrition — and we will fight it until the end."
