Death sentence requested against Corneille Nangaa and others traitors

On the other hand, twenty years in prison were requested against the uncle of the former president of the CENI, Putters Nangaa.

The civil party joining the action of the public prosecutor demanded, on the same Monday, a fine equivalent to 1 billion USD in national currency, for the damage suffered by the Congolese.

Faced with these indictments, the defence lawyers requested a five-day delay to better prepare their defence. The court only gave them 24 hours.

The Kinshasa/Gombe military court opened, on July 24 in Kinshasa, the public trial of the leader of the armed group Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), Corneille Nangaa. Twenty-four other defendants are also being prosecuted for rebellion against the Republic.

Five defendants appeared, while the others are "on the run", according to the indictment read by the president of the military court.

Corneille Nangaa and his co-defendants are being prosecuted for:

  • War crime
  • Participation in a criminal group
  • Treason.

They are accused of having created an armed group which fights the regular army alongside the Rwandan army.

The military prosecutor had invited the Kinshasa/Gombe military court to judge “by default” (in absentia) the defendants who were absent at the hearing for “flight”. The president of the court had recorded this request from the military prosecutor's office, to judge those absent "by default".
