Goma: The fight against hate speech and disinformation is raised on the table
MONUSCO organized an event of two days in Goma, focused on the theme “Fight against disinformation and hate speech”. This event occurs in a context marked by a growing flow of unverified false information, particularly via social networks.

This event, which began on Wednesday, May 8, brought together a diverse audience, including political actors, civil society representatives, students, and musical artists from the region.
MONUSCO stressed this event occurs in a context marked by a growing flow of unverified false information, particularly via social networks. This proliferation of disinformation frequently fuels tensions and divisions within communities, between political actors and the population, as well as with MONUSCO itself.
This dynamic harms social cohesion and threatens the fragile peace in provinces like North Kivu.
"During this event, nine essential principles were transmitted to us in order to avoid the spread of disinformation. Among these, the importance of not disseminating unverified facts, as well as avoiding relaying information obsolete by incorrectly contextualizing them in the present," highlighted by Maganya Furaha, one of the participants as a student at The University in Goma.
By addressing these essential questions and promoting a constructive exchange, this event illustrates the shared commitment between MONUSCO and the participants in favor of promoting peace and the fight against disinformation in the North Kivu region.
